Nike announced on Friday that the Beaverton, Ore.-based company has ended its partnership with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, following his guilty plea to the dog fighting charges previously brought against him.
“Nike has terminated our contract with Michael Vick following today’s release of details of his plea. As we have said in previous statements, we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and unacceptable,” the company said in a statement released on Friday.
On July 27, Nike suspended Vick’s contract without pay, calling the allegations “abhorrent,” yet supported Vick’s right to “the same due process as any citizen.”
However, in addition to yesterday’s statement, Nike has confirmed that it will not release the new Air Zoom Vick V shoe and that Vick’s four additional shoe products and three shirt products will be removed from company-owned stores.
On Aug. 27, a Virginia judge accepted Vick’s guilty plea for the dog fighting charges. He currently awaits a sentencing day of Dec. 10.
